Human Rights Week

The United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at its 3rd General Assembly on December 10, 1948, as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations to ensure fundamental human rights that are the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.

Moreover, the United Nations designated December 10 as Human Rights Day at its 5th General Assembly on December 4, 1950 and recommended that member states organize events to promote human rights activities as the commemoration of the day.

In Japan, the Ministry of Justice and the National Federation of Associations of Human Rights Volunteers designated the week ending on December 10 each year as Human Rights Week in 1949, and have carried out human rights awareness-raising activities throughout the country to facilitate spreading the idea of respecting human rights.
