The saiban-in system that commenced on May 21, 2009 is a system in which the saiban-in who have been selected from the general public participate in the criminal trials for serious cases. The saiban-in, with professional judges, determine whether the defendant is guilty or not and the sentence where guilty.
With this system, the justice system will be more familiar to the people.
The Ministry of Justice has been implementing public relations activities on the system so that the people will be able to deepen their understanding.
