The project to eliminate long-term unregistered inherited land
In order to eliminate long-term unregistered inherited land*, a project has begun to seek out legal heirs of the registered holder of the land that has gone unregistered for a long period of time in an area where a work would like to be done for public interest in response to a request from an expropriator or any other party to provide accessibility to legal heirs of the registered holder of the land at the legal affairs bureau.
Public works implemented by overseas private business operators that receive subsidies or grants from the national or local governments are also eligible for this project so long as the following criteria can be fulfilled.
- The work must have a legal basis (if the work is not directly stipulated by law, it must have an official legal basis, including ordinances, grant guidelines, etc. ) .
- The work must be implemented based on a review of public interest by the national or local government.
This issue is stipulated in the “Program for Promotion of Foreign Direct Investment in Japan 2025.”
* Those stipulated in Article 44 of the Act on Special Measures for Facilitating the Use of Land With an Unknown Owner (Act No. 49 of 2018).
