Japan held a side event at the 30th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (May 18, 2021).

On May 18, 2021, Japan organized an online side event at the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which kicked off the day before in Vienna, Austria.
In this side event, whose title was "Follow-up to the Kyoto Declaration(*): Reducing Reoffending by New UN Standards and Norms", was held in order to share good practices and deliberations at the Kyoto Congress on preventing reoffending and discuss the possible role of UN standards and norms in this area.
In her opening remarks, Ms. Kamikawa Yoko, Minister of Justice, noted that reoffending was a common issue that the members of the international community all faced, highlighting that reducing reoffending formulated the bases of secure and inclusive societies envisaged in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This was followed by a guest speech by the Executive Director of UNODC, keynote speeches by senior government officials from Egypt, Brazil, China and South Africa, and a panel discussion by experts including Mr. Seto Takeshi, Director of United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI).

(*)The Kyoto Declaration was adopted as an outcome document of the 14th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (“Kyoto Congress”).
