Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka

Activities and Results

Since the end of the civil war in 2009, Sri Lanka has been faced with the challenge of rebuilding a healthy social system.
One of the ways to rebuild a healthy social system is to improve the functioning of the courts, whose mission is to achieve social justice; it is very important to appropriately handle the various criminal activities that occurred taking advantage of the civil war.
Sri Lankan courts are currently experiencing delays due to various reasons and a large number of criminal cases have piled up unaddressed, causing such a problem as serious criminal offenders not being properly punished.
Therefore, the Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA)has been providing assistance to improve criminal justice practices from 2019 and the International Cooperation Department(ICD) also cooperates in this assistance by planning and implementing trainings in Japan/online for Sri Lankan officials.
