Activities and Results

Gyeongbokgung Palace
Since 1999, researchers from Japan’ and from South Korea have conducted joint research to deepen their mutual knowledge through the examination and comparative research of legal civil systems in the two countries, with the aim of using the results of the research in the development of their respective legal systems and improvement of practices, as well as fostering cooperative relationships between the two countries.
The researchers consist of South Korean researchers selected from judicial staff and Japanese researchers selected from Japan's Ministry of Justice, Legal Affairs Bureau and court staff, and two sessions are held: one in Japan and the other in South Korea. In each session, researchers from both countries are dispatched to the partner country to conduct practical research. The results of that research have been compiled into a reference book.
In South Korea, a “beobwon” is an institution equivalent to a court in Japan. The Training Institute for Court Officials is an institution equivalent to the Training and Research Institute for Court Officials in Japan that provides training for South Korean court staff.
In Japan, the Ministry of Justice is in charge of commercial and immovable property registration, family registration and deposits, and courts are in charge of civil execution. However, in South Korea, this is all handled by the courts.
