Mr. ASAKAWA Kazuo’s Note

Mr. ASAKAWA Kazuo
His sister Ms. ASAKAWA Sachiko (then aged 31) was injured in the Tokyo subway sarin gas attacks. She was damaged in her brain due to the injury by sarin in the subway train on Marunouchi Line. Since then, she has been bedridden. Mr. ASAKAWA Kazuo and other family members have still devotedly been caring Sachiko in hospital, continuing their family-wide struggle.

Mr. ASAKAWA Kazuo’s Note
My younger sister Sachiko could die at anytime immediately after the Sarin Attacks.
In the early stage thereafter, my family and I only hoped that her life would be saved, but we soon faced the reality. We had to handle a lot of matters about her in our living. For example, bringing back her clothes and bag home from the police station, suspending her credit card, going to the police and public prosecutors office for interview, conducting hospitalization procedure, paying the medical expenses, conducting procedure at her work place, taking procedures for applying for industrial accident insurance and life insurance, meeting with her medical doctors, changing hospitals, visiting her in the hospital, and I had to pay attention to the mental care of my other family members. In addition, I had no idea what I should start with in filing a lawsuit regarding the Sarin Attacks. I first tried to obtain information from a corporation lawyer of the company in which she worked, but did not get a clear answer. Even more, I had no knowledge on criminal or civil trials. But, I happened to read a newspaper article on the defense counsel team for the victims of Tokyo Subway Sarin Attacks and made contact with them. After that, I spent days attending, appearing and stating opinions etc. at the relevant trials, which transformed what had been unusual to me into what was usual. Victims mean not only those who were damaged but also their family members. I want you to know that you cannot look at this as bystanders and that this should not be left to the parties concerned.
I hope that you will never think of the attacks as the past incident and that you will never forget them to prevent the tyrannous terrorist attacks from recurring once again. I will never forgive Aum Shinrikyo.
