Status of Residence of “Designated Activities” (for Digital Nomad / Spouse or child of Digital Nomad)

Activities that fall under the status of residence of "Designated Activities (for Digital Nomad)" ○For a person who is staying/going to stay in Japan for a period not exceeding six months and doing/going to do international remote work, etc.
・Activities that involve using information and communication technology in Japan to engage in business of the organization's business office located in a foreign country, based on an employment contract with a corporation or other foreign organization established in accordance with the laws and regulations of a foreign country
OR
・Activities that involve providing services for a fee or selling goods, etc. to persons located in a foreign country using information and communication technology
※ Activities excluded that cannot be provided or sold without entering Japan. 
※ In principle, it is not granted to engage in activity other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted. 
※ Under this status of residence, it is not permitted to work based on an employment contract, etc. with a Japanese public or private organization.
 
Period of stay Six months (No extension will be granted.)
※ After exceeding the maximum period of stay(six months) with this status of residence, an applicant must wait for six months to reapply for the same status.
※ Residence card will not be issued.
Target countries/regions Applicant must be nationals or citizens of countries/regions as shown in this chart (PDF), which are under the scope of the visa exemption arrangements (Temporary Visitor) and also subjected to Japan's Tax Conventions.
Required annual income Annual income of an applicant must be at least 10 million yen at the time of application.
Other requirements Applicant must hold a private medical travel insurance which covers death, injury, illness during their stay.
※ As for the amount of compensation for medical treatment for injury and illness, it must be 10 million yen or more.

Daily activities carried out as a supported spouse or child of a person who has been granted a designated activity residence status as a person who stays in Japan for a period not exceeding six months and engages in international remote work, etc.

  • The application forms listed on this page can be printed and used in column A, number 4 of the Japanese Industrial Standards.
    Please print one page on each side. Do not print on both sides.
  • All certificates issued in Japan must be submitted within 3 months from the date of issue.
  • As for submitted documents are written in a foreign language, please attach a translation (Japanese).
  • As a general rule, submitted materials cannot be returned, if you would like to return the originals of materials, etc. that are difficult to obtain again, please request this at the time of application.
  • Please be aware that the authorities may request materials other than those listed on this page during the review process after receiving your application.

Application for Certificate of Eligibility

This is an application if you wish to newly enter Japan with this status of residence.
  Documents required when staying in Japan for a period not exceeding six months and performing international remote work, etc. Documents required when a spouse or child of a person who is staying in Japan for a period not exceeding six months and performing international remote work, etc.
*An applicant is a spouse/child accompanying a person who is staying in Japan for a period not exceeding six months and performing international remote work, etc.
*The applicant's spouse (or parent of the child as the applicant) is a person who is staying in Japan for a period not exceeding six months and performing international remote work, etc.

  2. One photograph(Please prepare photo that meets specified standards, and submit by attaching it to the application form.)
    ※ If an application is submitted using an inappropriate photo that does not meet the specified standards, we will ask you to retake the photo.

  2. Tax certificate or income certificate issued in the country where the applicant worked as a document proving annual income
    ※ Annual income of an applicant must be at least 10 million yen at the time of application.
    ※ When you are unable to submit a tax payment certificate, etc., please explain in writing the reason why you are unable to submit it, and submit an employment contract between a corporation established in accordance with foreign laws or a contract with a business partner (with the contract amount clearly stated), documents of the bank, etc. savings account in the applicant's name that shows deposit records related to annual income (copy of savings passbook, etc.)
    ※  A copy of your web passbook screen (something that shows your transaction history) is also acceptable.However, it must be printed in a state that cannot be modified (Excel files, etc. are not accepted).

    ※ Please submit a policy whose period of insurance corresponds to the period of your planned stay in Japan, and whose coverage includes death, injury, or illness incurred while residing in Japan.

    ※ If the applicant use the insurance attached to his/her credit card which can cover the coverage, please submit documents proving the coverage.

    ※ Please submit a written policy whose period of insurance corresponds to the period of your planned stay in Japan, and whose coverage includes death, injury, or illness incurred while residing in Japan.
    ※ As for the amount of compensation for treatment costs for injuries and illnesses, it must be 10 million yen or more.
    ※ If the applicant use the insurance attached to his/her credit card which can cover the coverage, please submit documents proving the coverage.
    ※ If the applicant use the family coverage under private insurance owned by a person who is staying in Japan for a period not exceeding six months and performing international remote work, etc. submitting materials that can confirm the coverage scope of the private insurance owned by the person. 
  4. A copy of the passport of applicant's spouse/parent who is residing or intending to reside in Japan with a status of residence of "Designated Activities (for Digital Nomad)".

If someone other than the applicant submits the application documents (Please check this page for information on who can submit application documents.), to confirm whether the person is able to submit the application documents, it is necessary to present a document proving the identity of the person submitting the application documents(company ID card, etc.).

If the name on the Certificate of Eligibility and the name on the passport are different, the process may take time due to confirmation during each procedure before entering the country, so if it is possible, submit your passport (copy of passport) at the time of application, please.

Application for permission to acquire status of residence

This is an application for children born in Japan who wish to obtain this status of residence.
 

Documents required if the child is a dependent of a person who is staying in Japan for a period not exceeding six months and performing international remote work, etc.
